How to Set SMART Goals and Track Your Progress

Setting goals is a great way to motivate yourself and achieve your desired outcomes. However, not all goals are created equal. Some goals are vague, unrealistic, or irrelevant, which can lead to frustration and disappointment. That’s why it’s important to set SMART goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. SMART goals help you to clarify what you want to achieve, how you will measure your progress, and when you will complete your goal. SMART goals also help you to stay focused, motivated, and accountable.

How do you create the SMART goals?

SMART is an acronym that stands for:

Specific: Your goal should be clear and well-defined, not ambiguous or general. A specific goal answers the questions of who, what, where, when, why, and how.

Example What exactly do you want to accomplish? Who is involved? Where and when will it take place? Why is it important? For example, instead of saying “I want to lose weight”, you could say “I want to lose 10 pounds in 3 months by following a healthy diet and exercising 3 times a week”.

Measurable: Your goal should have a way to measure your progress and success, not just rely on your feelings or impressions. A measurable goal has a quantifiable indicator or metric that you can track and evaluate.

Example What are the indicators or criteria that you will use to measure your success? For example, you could use a scale, a tape measure, a fitness tracker, or a journal to track your weight loss, your body measurements, your calories burned, or your mood and energy levels.

Achievable: Your goal should be realistic and attainable, not impossible or out of reach. An achievable goal is within your capabilities and resources, and considers the potential challenges and obstacles you may face.

Example Is your goal realistic and within your reach? Do you have the resources, skills, and abilities to accomplish it? What are the potential challenges or obstacles that you might face, and how will you overcome them? For example, you could research the best diet and exercise plans for your body type and lifestyle, consult a doctor or a trainer, or join a support group or a fitness class to help you achieve your weight loss goal.

Relevant: Your goal should be aligned with your values and purpose, not irrelevant or unrelated. A relevant goal supports your larger vision and mission, and contributes to your overall satisfaction and fulfillment.

Example. Is your goal aligned with your values, interests, and long-term vision? Does it matter to you and to others who are affected by it? How will achieving your goal benefit you and your situation? For example, you could think about how losing weight will improve your health, your confidence, your appearance, or your relationships.

Time-bound: Your goal should have a specific deadline or timeframe, not indefinite or open-ended. A time-bound goal creates a sense of urgency and accountability, and helps you prioritize and plan your actions.

Example When do you want to start and finish your goal? What are the deadlines or milestones that you need to meet along the way? How will you celebrate your achievements? For example, you could set a start date and an end date for your weight loss goal, and break it down into smaller, weekly or monthly goals. You could also reward yourself with something that supports your goal, such as a new outfit, a massage, or a vacation.

SMART GOAL template to use :

I will [specific and measurable objective] by [timeframe or deadline]. I will accomplish this goal by [action steps or strategies]. This goal is important to me because [reason or benefit].

Vague goal example:

I want to lose weight and get in shape.

SMART GOAL

I will lose 10 pounds and increase my stamina by running 3 times a week for 30 minutes each session for the next 3 months. I will track my weight, distance, and time using a fitness app. This goal is important to me because it will improve my physical and mental health, and boost my confidence and self-esteem.

You can modify and tailor this goal template to the specific things you want to achieve over a certain period of time.

Tracking your progress

You need to monitor and evaluate your actions and results regularly.

You can use tools such as calendars, planners, checklists, charts, graphs, or apps to record and visualize your data. You can also review your goals and adjust them if necessary, based on your feedback and learning.

It is also important to recognize and celebrate your success and gratitude with those who support you. Rewarding and appreciating your achievement no matter how big or small will help to acknowledge your efforts and reinforce the positive behavior and attitude.

Remember, as Zig Ziglar, motivational speaker and author, said:

“A goal properly set is halfway reached.”
